New Delhi:
Divorce battles in India are often synonymous with bitter allegations, prolonged financial disputes, and emotional exhaustion. However, a heartwarming scene unfolded in the Supreme Court of India on Thursday, reminding everyone that relationships can end with dignity and grace.
In a case that the top court termed a “rare settlement,” a woman won the admiration of the judges by refusing to take any alimony (maintenance) from her estranged husband. Going a step further, she voluntarily returned the gold bangles gifted to her by her mother-in-law during the wedding.
Supreme Court: “We Don’t See Such Gestures Often”
The bench, comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan, was hearing a mutual consent divorce petition. They were visibly moved by the wife’s decision to walk away without making any financial demands.
During the proceedings, when the topic of jewelry came up, the court initially assumed the wife was demanding the return of her Stridhan (assets gifted to a woman during marriage), as is common in matrimonial disputes. However, the woman’s counsel clarified the situation, stating that his client was not asking for anything—instead, she was there to return the gold bangles to her husband’s family.
A Lesson in Dignity
Appreciating the gesture, Justice Pardiwala remarked:
“This is one of those rare settlements where nothing is being demanded. On the contrary, the wife is returning the gold bangles. We appreciate this stand, which is seldom seen in such matters.”
Addressing the woman via video conferencing, the bench offered a piece of fatherly advice: “We appreciate your stance. Forget the past and live a happy life ahead.”
Invoking its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court granted the divorce immediately and quashed all other pending legal proceedings between the couple, allowing them to move on without further bitterness.
Why This Matters
In an era where divorce cases often drag on for years over monetary settlements, this case stands as a powerful example. It highlights that separation doesn’t always have to be about winning or losing—sometimes, it is simply about finding peace and letting go with respect.
“Stories like these remind us that dignity stands above all.
